Coquet Canoe Club ‘ Round the Island Race’ 2017
A much better day than last year, with calm seas and light to moderate wind. Even warm and sunny as well!
It was a slightly smaller entry (33 paddlers), which included all the Coquet Canoe Club Juniors who opted to go round the Island rather than do the Junior Race.
It was a close race for the finish, with the first 7 competitors all within about a minute and half of each other.
First back was Gilbert Spiers of Kirkaldy CC, paddling a racing SurfSki, in 42 mins 56 secs, closely followed by Kenny Fraser in a Sea Saw WWR. Neil Turnbull of Borders KC was the first home in a sea kayak and took the main prize for the 3rd year running. His time of 43 min 28 secs was a record time for a sea kayak, only 32 secs slower than the Ski. He was closely followed by Lizelle Kemp on a Ski.
Over half of the fleet took less than an hour to complete the course,
First home for the Coquet Canoe Club was 14 year old Dylan Sweet, who takes the Rab Beal Trophy for the second year.
Thanks to the RNLI, MCA and Coquet Shorebase Trust for supplying safety cover. Once again the Shorebase changing facilities and refreshments were greatly appreciated.
